THE Green Party has announced its Barnet and Camden shortlist for next year’s elections to City Hall.

Ballot papers were sent out to party members across the two boroughs last Friday (October 23) to choose out of three contenders for the London Assembly.

The line-up consists of computer programmer and Hampstead activist Stephen Taylor, Childs Hill campaigner Maria Park and New Barnet-based builder and Occupy activist Raymundo Obedencio.

The winner will challenge the incumbent Andrew Dismore, who has held the seat for Labour since 2012, and Conservative candidate Councillor Daniel Thomas.

An internal hustings will take place in North Finchley on November 12, and voting will close on November 23. The winner will be announced the following day.

The party says it is hoping to improve on its performance in the 2012 London Assembly elections, when its candidate AM Poppy came third with 10.7 per cent of votes.

The party has already announced Highgate councillor Sian Berry as its London mayoral candidate.

Andrew Newby, chairman of the Barnet Green Party and the constituency agent, said: "Focus has turned away from the Greens following the election of Jeremy Corbyn to the Labour leadership but there are sadly still many areas where only the Greens have a well-defined policy, from action on climate change right through to electoral reform.”
