GEOLOGISTS are hoping to show people just how much their society “rocks” as they celebrate their 50th anniversary.

The Amateur Geological Society was founded five decades ago and has been holding monthly meetings at St Margaret’s Church Hall, in Victoria Avenue, Finchley, for 20 years.

Throughout the year, they host a programme of events for those interested in the field, including illustrated talks and excursions.

Society secretary, and retired software designer, Julia Daniels joined the group in 1971.

The 76-year-old said her interest peaked when she met its founder, Klement Krysler, at a talk at a scientific society.

She said: “Klement showed me his extensive geological collection at his house and it was so interesting I resolved to start a collection of my own.

“I joined and have been going to events with my husband ever since.”

The group currently has 90 members and they organise a programme of events across the year including talks from experts and field trips.

Ms Daniels, who lives on Village Road with her husband Douglas, who is also a member, said their programme of talks is often complimented for the quality of speakers who attend.

To mark their anniversary, members have written a magazine written by those part of the group, which costs £5.

They will also hold an annual bazaar on Saturday, November 28 at St Mary’s Church Hall, in Hendon Lane, from 10.15am to 3.30pm.

Specialist mineral, gemstones and fossil dealers will also have stalls at the event.

It costs £10 for a one year membership per adult or £15 for a family.
