A Jewish youth band marked Holocaust Memorial Day with a visit from a survivor and former band member.

Barnet JLGB youth band, part of the Jewish Lads’ and Girls’ Brigade charity, welcomed 90-year-old Harry Bibring, who visited the group to talk about his experiences.

Born in Vienna in 1925, he told the group about the rise of anti-semitism in the city.

Upon arriving in the UK 1939 he moved to a house near the charity's head office. It was here that he became involved with the group, attending the band’s annual summer camp that year in Kent, paid for by the group.

Following his talk, members of the Band presented him with a JLGB hat and made him a lifelong honorary member of the Barnet Band.

Speaking after the talk, member Charlotte Kurash said: “It was an honour to have Harry visit us and tell us about his experiences during the Holocaust.

"You can learn so much through texts books but to have someone who lived through it, share their experiences with you, brought the full horror of what happened to life.”

Isabelle Murray also said, “Following his talk and his connections in 1939 with JLB as it was then it was very fitting that at the end of the evening we made him an honorary member of our Band. He seemed very moved when we presented him with a hat. I really hope he can come back and visit us again soon.”
