TRADERS are furious after being accused of blocking a new Tesco from opening on the high street.

Shopkeepers in High Road, North Finchley are desperate for the new supermarket to open where Tally Ho Discount used to be because they say it will help revive the area.

But before it can open, Tesco need planning permission for a loading bay outside the shop – but this is proving difficult.

Traders have since written to Barnet's Labour councillors because they claim Tesco told them the delay was due to their own opposition.

Helen Michael, who owns Café Buzz, said: “This is crazy – we’ve never raised any objections to this and want Tesco to open. I don’t know why they are using our names like this but I’m not happy.

“How wonderful is it that the third largest retailer in the country has to get our permission? I wish I wielded so much power – it’s ridiculous.

“I want them to get their finger out and for Tesco to open up as soon as possible.”

The Tally Ho Discount store, a greengrocers, closed last year and since then, trade has dropped in the area.

Traders say the footfall dropped after cash parking meters were removed from the borough’s high streets but Tesco could help erase some of that damage.

Mrs Michaels added: “It would be fantastic for this along the high road – we’ve got the chance to regenerate our high street in such an easy way but they are dragging their feet.

“It’s the chance to bring everyone back but the council don’t seem bothered. I want them to get their finger out.

“The shop is languishing empty and they don’t seem to care.”

McDonalds, which is next to the shop, is currently loading from the narrow corner on Friern Park and could also benefit from using the loading bay.

Raj Mathur, who owns Coffee Republic, said: “It’s diabolical and typical of the council, making life difficult for traders.

“They talk about working together and wanting feedback, but when it comes down to it, it’s just words.

“It’s shameful they are blaming the traders. Why would we object? Nobody likes to see empty shop fronts and there are too many of them.

“Tesco would be perfect in this high street – it’s badly needed.”

In a statement, Tesco said: “We have been in discussion with council officers and are awaiting feedback.

Barnet Council said: “We’re keen to progress discussions and believe the loading bay would be of benefit to the local high street.”

“Our highways department received a proposal on behalf of Tesco for a new loading bay to be installed on North Finchley High Road last summer. After considering the proposals and meeting the requestor on site in November, we asked for proposal to be re-designed so there will be no loss of parking spaces for motorists on the High Road.

“We are currently examining the new proposals and aim to get back to the applicant later this month. Once a suitable location is found we will consult with ward councillors as well as local traders and other interested parties for their views.

“We expect high standards of customer service from all of our staff and delivery partners. If we receive a complaint we will always look into it and take action where necessary.”
