AN MP has vowed to fight plans to build a towering block of flats that neighbours say will make their lives “hell”.

People in Weirdale Avenue, Whetstone, are against proposals to build five eight storey “towers” – 1,200 homes - on their doorstep at the nearby North London Business Park.

They are also against the creation of a new pedestrian and emergency services access road from their street and nearby Ashborne Avenue, which will be linked to the new development.

But after the Times Series exposed residents concerns on the front page last week, Chipping Barnet representative Theresa Villiers threw her support to their campaign.

The Conservative MP said: “I will fight these plans. I accept the need for new homes but eight storey blocks of flats are completely unacceptable.

“That kind of development would be wholly out of character with the local area; it would disrupt traffic; and put real pressure on local services. If housing is to be built on this site, it must be far less dense in order to avoid impacting on surrounding streets.

“I also strongly oppose any proposed access through Weirdale or Ashbourne Avenue.”

Neighbours fear having so many people move into the area will cause her narrow street to become choked with parked cars and cause traffic to “snowball”.

They also say the plans to build the homes are “far too enormous” because there is not enough infrastructure and branded the height of the buildings “excessive”.

The business park once housed a factory which employees were allowed to access through a manned gate, but this was closed off in the 1970s.

There were plans to allow cars to pass through in the 1960s but this was rejected because it was considered “too dangerous”.

Ms Villiers, as well as Chipping Barnet MP Lisa Rutter, have demanded urgent meetings with the council and developers to set out their strong oppositions to the plans.
