A MOTHER is desperately trying to raise £30,000 for an operation to help her disabled son walk by himself.

Lenny Kearns Baker of Barnet, is a four year old boy who enjoys playing football, reading and swimming.

At 14-months-old, Lenny was diagnosed with cerebral palsy, leaving his family feeling “devastated for him.”

A selective dorsal rhizotomy (SDR) operation costing £30,000 is needed to improve any muscle stiffness that Lenny has.

The NHS cannot pay for the operation, leaving Lenny’s family to raise the money themselves.

Nina Kearns Baker, Lenny’s mother, says she takes very opportunity to talk or share the fundraising page with people and on social media.

She said: “Lenny asks me ‘mummy, why can’t I stand on my own?’ and so I have told him about this fundraiser, and how people are helping us out.

“He plays football every Saturday and swims at least three times a week, he needs exercise more than others to help the movement in his muscles. It's heart breaking to watch him struggle and lose his ability to walk in his frame.

“It was only last week we heard that Lenny was on the waiting list for an operation in December this year or January 2017. I was so pleased because it has been so stressful and now we have at just over six months to raise the money.

"I would do anything to help Lenny avoid this in his life."

The Warren theatre group in East Barnet surprised Lenny and his family at the end of their recent production, by donating £500 to Lenny’s operation.

Lynne Tyson, vice chairman of the Warren, said: “We were all incredibly proud to be able to make the donation, as this is what The Warren sets out to do - help local people in need.”

Ms Kearns said Lenny loved the production and enjoyed the attention when he was asked to go up on stage with the cast.

She said: “I’m quite shy, but Lenny loved the attention, and it was great that they did that for us.

“I have a friend who sometimes writes for the group, and she put us forward as a type of charity they could support. I think we were in the right place at the right time, it was great of them to do that.”

The family are planning several events this summer to help raise as much money as possible.

Lenny also lives with his older sisters Elyse and Kennedy in Barnet, and Elyse is also planning an event in her school and the whole family are planning summer events to raise as much money as they can.
