THE future of Barnet after Brexit is due to be debated by the council tonight.

Councillors will meet at 7pm tonight in Hendon Town Hall to discuss the implications of the UK’s vote to leave the European Union on the borough.

While voters around the country were 52 per cent in favour of leaving, more than 62 per cent of Barnet voters wanted to remain.

The Policy and Resources committee will discuss what comes next following a motion by the full council on April 4 to have them discuss the outcome of the referendum, whatever the result.

It was agreed by agreed all parties the committee should assess the impact of Brexit on Barnet’s public services, jobs, businesses and residents.

Barry Rawlings, Leader of the Opposition at Barnet Council, said: “The decision has been made, although it has left our country divided as never before.

“It is now our collective duty to ensure the best outcome for everyone – including those on the lowest incomes who will be hit hardest by economic uncertainty as a result of Brexit.

"The consequences are very worrying - it has had an immediate impact on financial markets and this will have a knock-on effect on prices, jobs and public services.

“Brexit also affects thousands of EU citizens who are Barnet residents - many of whom will have lived here for most of their lives, and who we now need to reassure."

The Local Government Association has stressed the importance of local government having a seat at the table when negotiations between the UK and the EU begin.
