A COLLEGE STUDENT has won a national award for his dedication as full time carer to his mother.

Winner of the National Accident Helpline’s Young Carer of the Year Award, Sean Hurditt, from Cricklewood, has won a holiday with his mother Sue to disability charity Revitalise's Netley Waterside House.

Sean is sole carer to his mother, who is in remission from breast cancer and also suffers with high blood pressure and a number of other conditions which affect her mobility.

The 24-year-old said: “I am super grateful to win the vacation, let alone the award. I did not imagine we could win anything, but we are receiving so much."

Sean attends college one or two days a week and hopes to further his career in sports, as well as doing more with his church, in the future.

His 58-year-old mother said: "I have been blessed to have a loving and caring son like Sean. I'm so excited about the holiday, this is the first thing we've ever won."

The National Accident Helpline highlighted the serious lack of respite unpaid carers receive, with one in three never having a break and 73% having one week or less off each year.

National Accident Helpline managing director Simon Trott said: “Unpaid carers face enormous challenges, many of them carrying out their caring role seven days a week without a break for months and even years.

"We were very moved by the obvious care Sean has for his mum, putting her needs ahead of his own hopes and ambitions."
