PEOPLE were offered free health tests as part of a healthy living initiative.

Finchley and Golders Green MP Mike Freer, held his annual summer School for students this week, where students try to understand the government and its interests of the public’s health.

People lined up to speak with Mr Freer and received free health checks outside Finchley’s Waitrose store in Ballards Lane.

Students from 15-18 years-old designed leaflets to advertise the health event and spread the word across the borough.

Aidas Zvirblis, 17, is a student at Woodhouse College, Finchley and joined the summer school this year.

He said: "We have bene speaking to a lot people, and crowds have been queuing for the tests. We have even had to ask some people to come back later it has been so popular.

"People are talking to each in the queue so as well as raising awareness of health risks, it has a real community spirit to it.

"I have never had a BMI test before, I wasn’t aware of health risks and I think it’s important to raise awareness of cancer risks."

Pupils were also given the chance to shadow Mr Freer, take a Parliamentary tour and attend Treasury Questions, across the four day summer school event.

Mr Freer said: “It has been a good day and we have had a good reaction from the public. Some people have been advised on their health and some told to seek their GP’s help. Students will also check the results from today.

“I have spent four days with the students, and they have seen first-hand, what it’s like for an MP. We spent two days in Finchley and Golders Green and two days in Parliament.

“I set up the school because I used to receive lot of request for work experience, and this way, 25 students can see what it’s like talking to local people and being in Parliament.”
