TWO students were fined after illegally using their grandmothers’ disabled badges after admitting they were running late for an exam.

Mohammed Mohammed, 20, and Berkan Birol, 22, pleaded guilty to wrongfully using a disabled persons badge at Willesden Magistrates Court on July 5.

They were fined £400 each, and ordered to pay £140 costs and a £40 victim surcharge.

Mohammed was caught by a Corporate Anti-Fraud Team (CAFT) officer in December last year.

The officer checked the badge on his car and saw it was registered to somebody in 1936.

He then admitted it was his grandmother’s badge and used it because he was running late for an exam at Middlesex University in Hendon.

On the same day, Birol was caught with a badge registered to someone born in1938, and also admitted to using his grandmother’s badge.

He was always running late to an exam at the same University.

Barnet Council Leader, Cllr Richard Cornelius, said: "I hope these prosecutions send out the very clear message that it is not acceptable for these permits to be used illegally."
