Students dedicated a week of their summer holidays to join a design and construction company.

BAM, a European design and construction company, chose eight students from Borehamwood, Rickmansworth and St Albans to spend a week at the regional headquarters in St Albans.

The pupils from St Albans Girls School, St Joan of Arc and Hertswood School spent time on site, meeting clients and hearing from experts and young professionals.

At the end of the week the students were presented a bronze CREST award, which focuses on sustainable communities and disciplines like planning and design, as well as marketing.

June Wilkinson, BAM’s education and community co-ordinator, said: “It helps show how science, maths, engineering and technology they learn at school are used in practice.”

Students aged 15 from St Albans Girls School, St Joan of Arc and Hertswood School were selected from 27 applicants.

James Thomas, from the Construction Industry and Training Board, said: “I was quite taken back at how mature these young people were to use a week of their precious summer holiday to take advantage of this excellent opportunity.”
