PAINTINGS by surrealist artist Salvador Dali are now on show at an Oxford art gallery.

Specialist art dealer Aidan Meller has gathered a number of Dali works for sale at his gallery in Broad Street for an autumn showcase.

Mr Meller said: "Dali was such a phenomenon that his personality was likely to rival, even overshadow, his own work at times.

"But it should be remembered that behind the trademark moustache was a versatile and accomplished artist who created some of the most iconic 20th century art.

"Increasing recognition of his status means that Dali’s works are now becoming highly desirable among collectors and we are delighted to launch our autumn series of exhibitions with a surrealism showcase of authenticated works by such a major artist."

Spanish artist Dali, who died in 1989, was prolific and his output covered painting, sculpture, photography, film and fashion, including iconic works such as the Lobster Telephone, the Mae West Lips Sofa and The Persistence of Memory, one of his most recognisable paintings.

Gallery marketing manager Christian Johnstone said: "The paintings have come from different dealers across the world and the showcase has been very popular so far - two pieces sold in the first week - they can start from about £2,000."

The showcase is expected to run until the end of next month.
