A group of six men all from Borehamwood and Elstree took part in the Shine Marathon Walk to raise money for cancer research.

The walk, organised by the Cancer Research UK, sees many groups of people walking from Southwark Park all the way to Kensington and back along Southbank to finish at Old Billingsgate.

David Danzig, 38, in Borehamwood, and his five companions, better known as the Wood Walkers, walked 26 miles passed many iconic sites of London for cancer research.

He said: “It was a really good experience. It was tough and hard but we all managed to finish it which was the main priority.

“We started off as a small group training around the town but more people decided to take part in the night walk with us.

“All of six of us are from the Borehamwood and Elstree area so we called ourselves the Wood Walkers.

“Everyone has lost someone to cancer and we just wanted to do this walk to raise money for the charity.”

The walk passed Tower Bridge, Holburn, Kings Cross, Tottenham Court Road, Marble Arch, Hyde Park Corner, Knightsbridge and back along Southbank.

According to Mr Danzig there were a number of different walkers taking part including those with cancer and survivors.

He said: “It was very emotional. There were marshals during the walk who guided us through the walk.

“It was strange to see London at 3am. There was no one around and the marshals kept cheering us and pushing us to finish.

“People completed it at their own time and it was very colourful and special.”

Mr Danzig and others in the group have now caught the charity-giving bug and some are looking to do the walk again next year.

The annual walk offers a marathon-length trek as well as a half-marathon but the Wood Walkers pushed themselves and completed the longer walk.

He said: “I am definitely not a runner but this walk was amazing and really good fun.

“We would normally meet every Saturday and Sunday to train walking around Borehamwood.”

So far the group has raised more than £10,000 but their original aim was only £4,000 and people are still able to donate to the walk.
