A new father is “furious” at Marks and Spencer after claiming he found a maggot in broccoli bought at the chain’s Enfield store.

Hemduth Ramchurun, bought a pack of tender stem broccoli a fortnight ago to enjoy as part of a posh meal to celebrate the birth of his two children, Mia and Kael.

However, as the family tucked into the meal, Mr Ramchurun claims to have found a maggot inside the vegetable.

Concerned the contamination could cause a danger to his children through his wife’s breast milk, Mr Ramchurun arranged with M&S for the maggot to be sent for tests.

He said: “Half way through dinner my wife discovered a maggot embedded in the broccoli. We both felt sick and that was the end of our special dinner.

“As much as this was disgusting we became increasingly concerned by the fact that my wife was breast feeding.

“We didn’t want to take any risk of contaminating our babies and decided to stop the breast feeding until we get the all clear from M&S and their health and safety team.

“I am furious about this as our babies are lacking the precious mum's milk at this crucial stage of their lives and this is causing us a lot of distress and frustration.”

However, around a week later, Mr Ramchurun received an email back from the retailer, claiming they had lost the maggot and offering a £20 gift card.

An M&S spokesperson said: “We’re sorry to hear about the customer’s complaint. We take every step to ensure all insects are removed while washing our vegetables, however on rare occasions they can get can get hidden in the packs.

"This would not lead to any health implications for the customer. We have apologised and offered a full refund
