Finchley & Golders Green’s MP has been praised by a popular LGBT magazine for championing marriage equality.

Mike Freer was named ‘MP of the Year’ at an awards ceremony hosted by LGBT news website Pink News last night (October 26).

He was nominated for his campaigning on equality issues, including his support for the expansion of the HPV vaccination to men and boys and his support of marriage equality.

He said: “It was amazing to receive the PinkNews, ‘Speech of the Year’ award in 2013 for my contribution to the same-sex marriage debate.

“However, the campaign for equality goes on and that is why I am so grateful to receive the ‘MP of the Year’ award.

“I would like to thank Pink News, Gay Times, NATS, Terrence Higgins Trust, the APPG on HIV/AIDS, and all the other LGBT+ charities for their support in bringing equality issues to the top of the Government’s agenda.”

The award was won jointly with Kezia Dugdale MSP, the leader of the Scottish Labour Party.

PinkNews was set up in 2005 by Benjamin Cohen, and covers lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) news stories in the UK and across the world.

The awards evening, held at the Speaker’s House, Westminster, celebrates contributions politicians, businesses and community groups have made in improving LGBT equality in the UK and around the world.

Mr Freer was competing with Cat Smith MP, John Nicolson MP, Nicky Morgan MP and Kezia Dugdale MSP, all nominated for the same award.
