A great medieval battle between three kings will return to Barnet with the help of almost £100,000 in Heritage Lottery finding.

One of the most important battles in the fifteenth-century War of the Roses, 1471’s Battle of Barnet saw Kings Edward IV and Henry VI meet on the field, while future king Richard III was also there.

The Battle of Barnet project, run by Barnet Museum, Barnet Society and the Battlefields Trust, sought funding to develop activities and excavations which will help people learn more about the fateful battle.

With £98,600 grant from the Heritage Lottery Fund the project can develop resources for local schools, a medieval festival, community archaeology, a heritage trail and a new exhibition at Barnet Museum.

Member of the project team and trustee of Barnet Museum Mike Noronha said: “We are delighted the Heritage Lottery Fund is supporting the town of Barnet as we set out to commemorate and celebrate this important part of our history.”

The site of the Battle of Barnet is the only battlefield in London officially registered by Historic England.

An archaeological investigation was launched in autumn last year which helped the project discover more about the so-called “Battle of Three Kings” and further archaeology is planned for next summer.
