A care home for the elderly based in a Barnet street known as “billionaire’s row” is set for a £38 million redevelopment after securing planning permission.

Hammerson House, a Jewish care home in The Bishops Avenue, is surrounded by some of the most expensive homes in the borough – including one recently rented by pop star Justin Bieber.

Plans to demolish and replace the current site in Garden Suburb to increase capacity to 116 residents were approved by Barnet Council on Wednesday (November 30).

The council’s permission comes with the condition Nightingale Hammerson submits details to the planning authority for approval before each stage of the demolition and construction.

The proposal was initially announced in January and the site is due to be completely vacated before construction begins next year.

According to Nightingale Hammerson, who run the home, all current residents have secured alternative accommodation for the duration of the work.

Chair of Nightingale Hammerson Melvin Lawson said: “We are delighted we can now move forward with our plans to redevelop Hammerson House.

“Our priority is to continue the long tradition of providing an exemplary standard of care for the Jewish community.

“The needs of older people in the community are evolving and we must be able to provide homes with flexible care solutions.”

Promising to combine “five star hotel standards of service with a warm and welcoming environment”, the new home will provide a variety of care, including specialised care for residents with advance dementia.

The new build will be divided into six ‘households’ of bedrooms, each with their own dining rooms, resident lounges.

Included on the grounds will be sheltered winter gardens, social spaces and space for specialised therapeutic care for residents with dementia.
