'Gentle giant' moped rider, 16, killed in hit-and-run

A 16-year-old moped rider killed in a hit-and-run has been described as a “gentle giant” by his family.

Alfie O’keefe Hedges, of East Barnet, died after his moped collided with a car in North Finchley on Thursday, November 17.

Police said the driver and occupants of the black Nissan Pixo abandoned the car at the scene, in Buxted Road, and left on foot. Alfie, an Arsenal fan, died in hospital nine days later.

TfL proposals to change bus routes in London to support outer borough commuters go to public consultation

Bus routes in Barnet could be set for a major lift if residents are ready to fight their case, according to the borough’s shadow Assembly member.

Transport for London has launched a consultation on proposed changes to 23 central London bus routes to better match bus services with demand from passengers.

Initial proposals take into account reduced usage of buses in London’s travel zone one and the increased use of services such as the Night Tube or the newly developing Elizabeth line and Crossrail 2 as alternatives.

Luke Stella, of St Albans, jailed for four years after running down 71-year-old Francis Abbott in Potters Bar with his motorcycle

A man who killed a pensioner while speeding on his motorcycle has been jailed for four years.

Luke Stella, of St Albans, was driving down Mutton Lane, Potters Bar around 4.45pm on April 14 2014 when he hit 71-year-old Francis Abbott, who was crossing the road.

Mr Abbott was taken to hospital, where he died, and Stella was sentenced to four years in prison at St Albans Crown Court on Wednesday (November 30) for causing the death by dangerous driving.

Police helicopter hovers over Hendon for anti-terrorism exercise by Metropolitan police and partners

Did you see a low-flying, police helicopter flying over Hendon on Wednesday?

If so, you were not alone.

After receiving initial reports of the helicopter spotted flying low, people reached out on social media to see if anyone else had seen the somewhat unsettling image.

It has since been revealed that it was taking part in a police training exercise.

More than 500 staff and officers from a variety of agencies took part in Exercise Treblerope, a three-day response exercise for police, military and other partners from Monday to Wednesday (November 28-30).

Reece Jones of Hendon found guilty of the murder of David McKenna, disabled man from Barnet

A man who killed a disabled man with a golf club in a “brutal” attack then left his body to be found following a fire has been convicted of murder.

Police, ambulance and fire staff found the body of David McKenna at his home in Finch Close, Barnet, around 6am on October 12 last year while responding to calls of a fire at the ground floor flat.

Reece Jones, of West Hendon Broadway, Hendon, was found guilty of his murder on Wednesday (November 30) at the Old Bailey and will be sentenced at the same court tomorrow.

Barnet Council’s staff may be walking through dangerously polluted air on their way to work every day, according to an independent study.

Nitrogen dioxide (NO2) air pollution can be measured in microgrammes per cubic metre (μg/m3), with the legal annual limit in any one area being 40 μg/m3.

Green party members in Whetstone have measured the NO2 levels in nine places throughout the area using diffusion tubes, with only one tested area coming in under the legal limit.

Barnet Council announces free weekend parking throughout December in Barnet, in time for Christmas and New Year​

Christmas has come early for Barnet drivers as free parking sweeps the borough just in time for the holiday shopping season.

Throughout December, parking will be free on weekends in all pay-to-park bays and all of Barnet Council’s car parks.

Announced today by the council, the scheme will debut this weekend (December 3-4) and carry on for the rest of the month.

This will include the extended bank holiday weekends around Christmas day (December 24-27) and New Year (December 31-January 2).
