A sixth-former has been named St John Ambulance’s West London cadet of the year.

Yameera Patel, who goes to at Dame Alice Owen’s School in Potters Bar will represent fellow cadets across West London throughout the year at public and St John Ambulance events.

In a competition, Yameera had to complete a first aid challenge to demonstrate her life-saving abilities, take part in a debate, give a presentation and be interviewed by judges.

She joined Barnet St John Ambulance as a cadet just over four years ago and is now a cadet corporal, helping at weekly meetings by giving support to younger volunteers and passing on her first aid skills.

The 16-year-old said: “I am thoroughly enjoying being part of the youth forum and representing cadets from the west District.

“I look forward to taking this role further as district cadet of the year.

“Cadets have amazing opportunities within St John Ambulance and I’m really keen to promote these opportunities to them and ensure they achieve everything they possibly can.”

She will now go on to compete for the title of overall London regional cadet of the year and national cadet of the year in April.

St John Ambulance cadets learn first aid along with a wide range of other subjects such as leadership, radio communications and personal development.
