Later this month Barnet will host its annual ceremony to mark Holocaust memorial day.

It will be hosted on Sunday, January 29, in the Rickett Quadrangle at Middlesex University’s Burroughs campus, Hendon.

The theme of this year’s event will be “How can life go on?”, asking people to think about what happens after genocide and the responsibility to help rebuild.

Mayor of Barnet, Councillor David Longstaff, councillors and dignitaries will lead a procession into the quadrangle at the start of the ceremony.

Students from the Akiva School will hand out snowdrop bulbs as part Barnet’s project to plant a snowdrop in memory of every one of the 1.5 million children who died in the Holocaust.

Cllr Longstaff said: “Holocaust Memorial Day gives us all the opportunity to remember all those who lost their lives in the Holocaust and in other genocides.

“Barnet’s annual commemoration is always a poignant event and this year’s thought provoking theme prompts us to consider the aftermath of the Holocaust and other atrocities around the world.”

Pupils from Akiva School and Bell Lane Primary School have also been invited to hand out 1,000 Snowdrop bulbs at the mayor of London’s Holocaust memorial day ceremony at City Hall.

So far 45,000 bulbs have been planted at schools around the borough.

All residents are invited to the memorial service, beginning at 1pm with people asked to take their seats by 12.45pm.

Doors open at midday.
