An eight-year-old who raised £50 from sweets he collected over a Jewish holiday has given it all away to help Syrian refugees.

World Jewish Relief is the British Jewish community’s international humanitarian agency, supporting refugees in Greece and Turkey, based out of Childs Hill.

Elisha Abeles from Finchley saved up all the sweets he was given over the Simchat Torah and sold them on over the past few months to raise money.

He has donated it to World Jewish Relief’s refugee crisis appeal, which has helped over 18,000 refugees in the past year.

Elisha said: “I am concerned about the refugees because they have lost everything and don't have any shelter.

“I chose to help refugees because I want to show them that Jewish people care about all the people in the world.”

The charity has raised nearly £1 million in the past year to provide shelter, warm clothing, food and medical care to refugees.

Chief executive Paul Anticoni said: “It is people like Elisha who give me hope for the future.

“When I was his age, I'm sure I'd have guzzled down all the sweets myself.

“But Elisha's restraint and thoughtfulness remind us how acts of kindness can change the world and if he ever wants to join our fundraising team, he should give me a call.”
