A long-standing bank branch is set to shut down as HSBC continues its national sweep of closures.

The multinational banking company has already announced 55 local branches it will close due to “a change in the way local customers are banking”, with an aim to close 62 before 2017 ends.

Finchley’s Church End branch is the latest to be announced, set to close in May later this year.

HSBC head of retail banking and wealth management Francesca McDonagh said: “The way our customers bank with us is changing.

“More customers are using mobile and internet banking and fewer people are using our branches.

“Nearly 90 per cent of our interactions with customers are now through our digital channels – an increase from 80 per cent last year.

“The decision to close these branches will ensure a more sustainable branch network for the future as we continue to invest in our digital platforms and our people.

“Our priority is now to work closely with our colleagues and customers.”

Customers will be advised of alternative services nearby, with the branch offering one-to-one sessions to explain options and assist in setting up mobile or internet banking.

Use of physical branches has fallen by 37 per cent for HSBC in the past year, with 93 per cent of all customer contact being over phone, internet or smartphone.

A partnership with the nearby North Finchley Post Office, in High Road will be established to maintain services for local customers.

It is open Tuesday 9.30am-5.30pm and Monday and Wednesday to Sunday 9am – 5.30pm.
