Opposition figures were shot down for using "alternative facts" by Barnet Council after accusing it of not knowing where its own borough's boundaries lie.

Barnet Council is currently running a £50 million five-year programme to improve roads and pavements across the borough, though the use of loose asphalt has been criticised by residents.

Highways contractor Re, run by Capita, proposed a pavement resurface in the Colindale segment of Edgware Road – though Labour councillor Nagus Narenthira pointed out the plans also included Brent.

Last July, Re was caught out by eagle-eyed residents and blasted by Labour councillors for installing street signs in Lower Strand, Colindale, which featured the neighbouring council’s logo.

Cllr Narenthira said: “Capita clearly need more than a map to find Barnet, they seem to have an on-going problem identifying which borough Colindale is in.

“You would think Barnet Council would ensure they got it right after last year's mistake with the street signs.

“I wonder how much money would have been wasted on improving Brent at Barnet tax-payers’ expense if I hadn’t picked this up?”

Barnet Council hit back at Labour, explaining it has a long-standing agreement with Brent Council on the particular section of Edgware Road which straddles both boroughs.

In the agreement, Barnet is responsible for maintenance work to the pavement funded by Transport for London.

A spokesperson the council declined to name said: “This agreement requires Barnet and Brent councils to mutually agree any works costing in excess of £10,000.

“The resurfacing of this particular pavement is in line with this agreement and there has been no mistake in this instance.”

Leader of the council Richard Cornelius hit back at Cllr Narenthira, saying she should have known about this deal with Brent Council.

He said: “I am surprised to find a ward councillor would not know her own ward.

“Sometimes Labour plants members who are more interested in posturing than the truth.

“Perhaps this is a case of alternative facts.”
