Ninety nursery children are being evacuated from a synagogue in Borehamwood, for fears the roof will blow off because of Storm Doris.

Police were called earlier this morning by Borehamwood and Elstree Synagogue's caretaker, who said gale force winds had loosened metal strips on the roof.

The synagogue is currently being used by a nursery group who are hoping to evacuate the children to a different site.

The police have closed the roads around the synagogue, in Croxdale Road, and firefighters are currently at the scene trying to secure the roof.

Speaking on behalf of the synagogue, a spokesperson said: “Our first concern is for the health and safety of all those who were present and we are thankful that nobody has been injured following the damage caused by the storm.

"We are extremely grateful to the emergency services for their support.

"Over the next couple of days, we will do everything we can to ensure community activity can continue, whilst ensuring the safety of the community and its neighbours.”

More to follow.
