Man hunted by police after woman sexually assaulted on bus in Barnet

A man is being sought by police after a woman was sexually assaulted on a bus in Barnet.

The 26-year-old victim was travelling on the 332 service from Kilburn High Road at around 5.30pm on Wednesday, September 28, when a man sat down next to her.

He moved in close, making her feel uncomfortable before sexually assaulting her.

The woman then got up to switch seats but was sexually assaulted again.

Arkley reservoir outages end but problems persist for Barnet

Work continued to fix major disruptions to the water supply in Barnet.

Affinity Water technicians worked to fix a fault at the Arkley reservoir from Monday afternoon (February 20) which affected water in the EN4, EN5, N12 and N20 areas more than most.

Many households saw their water go off around lunchtime and it was not restored until the early hours of Tuesday (February 21).

Fifty case of female genital mutilation (FGM) were reported in Barnet across a single year, according to fresh data.

A common practice in parts of west and east Africa, the NSPCC recently released national data for occurrences of the practice in the UK.

The number, recorded between April 2015 and March 2016, is drastically lower than neighbouring Camden (140) and Haringey (325).

Elderly resident of Ash Close flat in Edgware found dead in his flat

An elderly man has been found dead in his home after no one checked on him for weeks.

Last Tuesday (February 14), police were called to an address in Ash Close, Edgware, where they found a man in his 80s who had been dead long before discovery.

The man’s body has since been sent to North London coroner’s court where he will be formally identified and cause of death will be determined in due course.

Barnet Council's CELS committee votes to go along with proposals in the new National Funding Formula for schools

Barnet Council has voted to accept changes to school funding which are “potentially devastating”, according to the opposition.

School union NAHT has calculated Barnet is set to lose £497 in funding per pupil when the new National Funding Formula is instated by the government.

The Conservative-controlled council voted not to resist the controversial changes in their official response to government consultation, which was debated at Tuesday’s (February 21) children, education, libraries and safeguarding committee (CELS).

Man charged with Brent Cross murder where Colindale man was stabbed in the neck

A man has been charged in connection with the murder of a man who was stabbed in the neck during a street fight.

Joseph Olopo, of Colindale, was pronounced dead in hospital last Friday (February 17) after a fight broke out between a number of men in Heathfield Gardens, Brent Cross.

Jason De Sousa, of no fixed addressed, was arrested on Wednesday (February 22) and charged the following day with the murder of Joseph Olopo.

Woman hit by train at Queensbury station on Jubilee line causing severe delays

Tube services have been severely delayed after a woman was hit by a train near Edgware.

Queensbury station on the Jubilee line was closed Friday morning  (February 24) following the incident at 7.14am.

She was taken to St Mary’s hospital and is still being treated for “non-life threatening injuries”.

UK government thanks Barnet and local authorities for work resettling refugees from Syria

Barnet has helped to resettle 37 Syrian refugees fleeing danger in the home country last year.

In total, 5,500 people escaping conflict in the Middle East have been resettled in the UK by the vulnerable persons resettlement (VPR) scheme, with a view to resettle 20,000 by 2020.

The government has thanked Barnet for its efforts as a borough to contribute to the VPR project across 2016.

Almost one third of cars in Barnet and Camden run off diesel according to Department for Transport

The number of diesel cars in Barnet could be contributing to a “health emergency”, new analysis shows.

Hundreds of doctors, nurses and health professionals wrote this week to prime minister Theresa May urging her to remove diesel vehicles as soon as possible.

Figures from the department of transport show of the 189,867 cars in Barnet and neighbouring Camden, 56,880 – or 30 per cent – are run on diesel.
