A group of community runners spent an evening building a pond at a school.

GoodGym runners ran from the Phoenix Cinema, East Finchley to Archer Academy in Beaumont Close to help biology teacher Maaike Milligan build a pond in the school grounds.

The group began digging two weeks ago with help from pupils, and hope the pond will become home to various wildlife for children to study.

GoodGym trainer Pennie Varvarides said: “Because it’s an ongoing project we will be going back a few times over the next couple of weeks. We are always on the lookout for more tasks we can help with.”

GoodGym promotes a healthy lifestyle through encouraging running groups to a take part in a community activity as part of their exercise.

Regular activities range from visiting vulnerable people to building work and gardening.

GoodGym runner Hazel Childs posted to social media: “Great fun tonight & the pond is coming along nicely!

“Looking forward to going back to Archer Academy sometime soon & seeing the end result!”

The group’s next runs will see them painting and upcycling furniture at Dell Fields care home and the Barnet Furniture centre.

To join the GoodGym runners, meet at the Phoenix Cinema, East Finchley, every Tuesday at 6.45pm or go to www.goodgym.org/areas/barnet for more information.
