Barking dogs is one of the top triggers for noise complaints in Barnet, new research shows.

According to Cirrus Research, Barnet is one of three boroughs where the sound barking dogs has triggered noise complaints, along with Lewisham and Sutton.

Barnet received on average 3.6 complaints per 1,000 residents over last year, contrasting with the noisiest borough in the report, Kensington and Chelsea, which received 87.4 complaints per 1,000 residents.

Cirrus Research marketing manager James Tingay said: “What one person thinks is acceptable could drive someone else crazy so noise enforcement teams have a difficult job at the best of times.”

The top three complaints received across London were from loud construction, music and commercial vehicles, with 143,105 complaints received overall last year.

Pawan Dhande, on behalf of Barnet Council, said: “Problems with constantly barking dogs can often be resolved with some training and by avoiding leaving them on their own for long periods of time.

“It’s often a good idea to speak to neighbours to try and resolve noise issues first. If this is unsuccessful or not possible, a complaint can be made by calling 020 8359 7995 or on the council website at www.barnet.gov.uk.

“Investigating officers will always try to resolve the situation informally, but if this fails and the noise is deemed to be a problem a statutory notice may be served under the Environmental Protection Act 1990.”

The research also showed the richest borough tend to be noisiest, with Kensington and Chelsea topping the list, followed by Westminster and Hammersmith and Fulham.
