A wheelie bin was set on fire close to some homes.

Police and the fire service were called to Dales Path, in Borehamwood, around 10.30pm on Tuesday night to reports of a dustbin on fire.

Police are still currently making enquiries to find out who the bin belongs to in order to get a crime report filled. They also said it looks like it could be a suspicious fire.

Neighbours near the alleyway have said this is not the first fire there has been.

Suzanne Alford, who posted the pictures of the blaze on Facebook, said: “There have been well over 12 of these bin fires in both small and large bins around the area all within close proximity to homes and flats over the last few months.”

It has been suggested that this fire was because of a new craze in which people set fire to wheelie bins to inhale the fumes.

Assistant Chief Fire Officer Ian Parkhouse, from Hertfordshire County Council’s Fire and Rescue Service, said: “Residents should be on the lookout for anyone starting fires, and always call 999 if there is any uncertainty about a fire.

"Arson is extremely dangerous. It puts lives and property at risk. While our crews are dealing with arson incidents they are diverted away from other emergencies and community safety work.

"We ask all residents to be vigilant, and report any behaviour they are concerned about.”
