A drama student carrying a toy gun sparked a large scale police operation yesterday.

Police were called to Hillside Avenue, in Borehamwood, yesterday after reports of a man carrying a gun near Yavneh College.

However, the head teacher of Yavneh College Spencer Lewis has since sent a text to parents confirming what happened.

In the message it reads: "Further to my text earlier this afternoon, you may have heard that there was a rumour that a young man with a gun was seen outside Monksmead School, next door to us.

"There was some police and CST activity and lots of talk on social media but it was a false alarm, in fact it was simply one of our Sixth Form students who was bringing a toy gun from his car to be used in a drama production.

"I am pleased to say that all appropriate procedures were followed and that everything is fine."

Sarah Spence-Miller from Hertfordshire Constabulary said: "Following the conclusion of the incident, staff at the Yavneh College spoke with officers to inform them there had been a false alarm and that a pupil had taken a toy gun in for a drama production.

"Understandably, due to the nature of the report, the matter was taken extremely seriously not only by police but other local schools.

"Going forward we will be liaising with educational establishments in the area to revisit procedures in to relation to reports like these to ensure we can effectively work together."
