More than 20 primary school children were not given their first choice of secondary school.

Children and parents across Radlett were disappointed after being told they did not get their first choice of secondary school.

Due to oversubscription at secondary schools in Borehamwood and Bushey, the closest school for them to now go to is in Watford – meaning parents and children will have to make the commute earlier than desired.

Hertfordshire County Council Caroline Clapper, who represents Radlett, said: “The issue of secondary schooling in Radlett is one that I am taking very seriously.

“I was very disappointed that Harperbury School lost the Department for Education funding and I am keen to ensure that Radlett children have better choices when it comes to secondary schooling.”

Following the recent school allocations, Cllr Clapper had another meeting with Hertfordshire County Councillor David Williams who is in charge of education.

Cllr Williams agreed to discuss the concerns about parents having to travel long distances to take their children to school.

Cllr Clapper is currently in the process of organising a round table discussion with Hertfordshire County Council’s education department, the estates department, Hertsmere Borough Council and one of the local schools to try and reach an agreement of a possible new school.

She said: “I think that both children and their parents should have the opportunity to be closer to home and to their local support network.

“The best solution would be a new secondary school being built near or in the Radlett area.

“I hope that with all the stakeholders getting involved we can start the work towards achieving a positive outcome for the future of the area.”

Cllr Clapper said she will continue to raise this matter at County Hall but asks for anyone affected by this to speak to Cllr Williams.
