The South West Hertfordshire MP has called the prime minister’s call for a snap election the “right decision” but admitted she was "reluctant" to break previous promises not to hold one.
Conservative MP David Gauke said he believes the decision will help negotiations with the EU and has confirmed that he will stand for re-election if the election goes ahead.
Earlier today, the prime minister announced that she will call for a snap general election on June 8, despite months of repeatedly ruling out the possibility.
Mr Gauke said: “I think the prime minister has made the right decision to call a general election now.
“A conclusive general election result will strengthen her hand in the negotiations with the EU and give the country greater stability and certainty."
When asked why he thought the prime minister had made such a U-turn, Mr Gauke said: "I know that Theresa gave this much thought and reluctantly concluded that it was necessary in order to strengthen her negotiating position."
