A cat hotel is set to come to East Barnet after planning permission was granted by the council, despite protests from neighbours.

The Longford Luxury Cat Hotel, which currently has 12 hotels across the UK, is to be built in the garden at 64 Haslemere Avenue, East Barnet, with the majority of comments objecting to the proposal.

The proposal was approved on the condition that a maximum of 14 cats would be allowed to stay at one time, with members of the public not permitted to the hotel after 5.30pm on weekdays and Saturdays, or at all on Sundays and public holidays.

Janet Hanson of Haslemere Avenue commented on the application: “I do not want the cats coming into my garden, the smells, noise and disturbance of this and I do not want the customers coming and going to take up parking spaces.

“This sort of business needs to be in a more open environment where neighbours will not be disturbed and there are no other properties so close by.”

She added: “I do not see why permission should be granted for this project in an area which is not appropriate for the purpose and will negatively affect others who have lived here peaceably for a long time.”

Other public comments include concerns over hygiene, odours from the property and increased footfall on a residential road.

One commenter also said Land Registry deeds for the property state no building erected on the site is to be used for any purpose other than private dwelling, with the cat hotel infringing on this “covenant”.

The hotel itself is to be built as an outbuilding surrounded by a timber pergola, with seven flower-named suites and interconnecting areas with toys and equipment, taking ten days to build.

The proposal was submitted along with letters of support from neighbours living outside of Barnet, as well as an environmental survey of the Welwyn Garden City hotel.

The construction is expected to take ten days.
