A temporary “community hub” was opened on Saturday on the West Hendon estate to replace a facility torn down in the regeneration.

The “community hub” took suggestions from neighbours on its design and is able to cater for various activities and services, before a permanent space is built at a later date.

Mayor of Barnet Cllr David Longstaff joined more than 60 West Hendon neighbours, Deputy Mayor Cllr Sury Khatri and all three ward members for tea and cake at the grand opening on Saturday.

Cllr Longstaff said: “It is good to see the regeneration scheme providing this excellent community facility for existing and new residents on the West Hendon estate.

“Today’s launch demonstrated this new space can be an important resource for the community."

The regeneration itself has caused some controversy, with a recent inquiry having taken place to look into compulsory purchase orders of homes on the existing estate, to make way for new housing.

The space, with projects supported by developer Barratt Metropolitan LLP, will also contain an office so residents can ask the regeneration team questions about the future of their estate.
