A 20-year-old who is terrified of heights is climbing a mountain to support her friend who has been diagnosed with cancer.

Hannah Siequin, of Parkmead, Loughton, aims to reach the top of Mount Snowden in honour of her friend, Mark Bell, on May 26.

Mark, 40, was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer last year and she hopes to raise £1,000 for Pancreatic Cancer Action.

She said: “She said: “Mark is the nicest person, he is extremely genuine and wouldn’t hurt a fly.

“I was so shocked when I heard the news, he is so young and I would never expect it to happen to someone so bubbly and energetic.

“No one should have to go through what Mark and his family are currently going through and it feels good to be doing something about it and potentially saving lives

“I would encourage other people to get involved with charity, it is great for developing your character”.

Mark, who has been in the army and worked as a chef, began complaining of severe stomach pains last year but they were dismissed as digestive problems.

But when he was rushed to hospital with acute pancreatitis, he was told he had cancer and had just six to eight months to live.

The stepfather’s family were told to prepare for the worst but he has held a number of charity football matches and dinners.

Encouraged by her friend’s actions, she decided it was only right she try and raise money for the charity also.

Her training has consisted of numerous long walks and runs, she is also a keen boxer.

She described her training as very tough, although feels “confident” that she is up to the challenge - and is determined to conquer her fear of heights, too.

She added: “It is time to show Mark my support and raise money for the charity myself. Please dig deep in your pockets and donate and show support.”

She has so far raised £625.
