The latest exhibition at the Highgate Gallery takes inspiration from fisherman in Croatia using powerful lights to attract the fish to the surface.

Night Fishing in Uglijan is a series of 38 paintings from Danny Israel, from Highgate, which arose out of a trip to the island of Uglijan, in Croatia.

These paintings follow the stream of life, from microscopic forms to larger sea mammals, as they emerge from the deep.

These acrylic images are achieved by liberal use of the same medium – water. Danny also wanted to create surfaces which in themselves are visually engaging.

Danny studied Fine Art at the University of Wales, in Cardiff. His first exhibition was at Reading Museum in 1972.

He has work in various collections including the Victoria and Albert Museum print department as well as that belonging to Elton John.

This exhibition at the Highgate Gallery is his third in the Highgate Literary and Scientific Institution and reported to be the largest.
