Mike Freer has reigned victorious as the MP for Finchley and Golders Green as Conservative seats around the country are lost to other parties.

Mr Freer was elected MP in 2010 for Finchley and Golders Green, but fought off stiff competition in 2015 and again in 2017 to take the seat back for the Conservatives.

Mr Freer’s victory, however, was far narrower than in 2015, where he beat second place candidate Sarah Sackman of Labour by more than 5,000 votes.

This year, the lead was only around 1,500 votes with the win totalling 24,599 votes to Labour candidate Jeremy Newmark’s 22,942.

Mr Freer, who called his win “humbling”, said: “We left the house and we didn’t know what it was going to be, especially when you are seeing the results across the UK.

“I think when people know you get a good, hard-working MP, that will work for quite a lot of people even if they don’t like the campaign or the leader.”

Mr Freer said he will be celebrating with a fry up with his team.

Mr Newmark said he will “continue the fight against racism, prejudice and anti-Semitism” and that he will continue to work hard in Finchley and Golders Green, and as the chair of the Jewish Labour Movement.
