A neighbourhood watch group gave out food to firefighters tackling the blaze in Golders Green over the weekend.

Shomrim, a volunteer organisation which provides 24-hour response to criminal incidents and support neighbours, attended the fire at Kay's store in Princess Parade, off Golders Green Road, Golders Green, offering food and drink to firefighters and those evacuated.

More than 70 firefighters from Hendon, West Hampstead, Finchley and Mill Hill stations were called to the scene due to all of the ground floor of the shop and half of the second floor of the building billowing with flames and smoke, and five people were rescued from the flats backing the building.

A spokesman from the Shomrim said: "Many volunteers from Shomrim NW London were on scene all day assisting and supporting those who were evacuated from the nearby buildings which included many young families.

"We purchased and distributed more than 300 slices of fresh hot pizza, chips and cold drinks and sandwiches to those evacuated and the many emergency services personnel."

The fire is now under control and investigations into the cause of the fire are ongoing.
