The Borough Commander of Barnet’s police force may become the commander of three boroughs in a new merging scheme.

Barnet’s borough commander Chief Supt Simon Rose is likely to become the tri-borough Commander of Brent, Harrow and Barnet if proposals go ahead that will see the 32-borough model move to larger units across the city.

The final decision will be made by Commissioner Cressida Dick and Deputy Mayor for policing and crime Sophie Linden in the autumn following an evaluation of test sites.

Mr Rose said: “For my part I am starting to speak with colleagues in the other boroughs to see what can be done to make any transition as smooth and painless as possible for all as well as making appointments to discuss the issues and listen to the concerns of interested parties across the three boroughs.”

Test sites currently in operations are covering Islington and Camden, and Barking and Dagenham, Havering and Redbridge.

Harrow West MP Gareth Thomas raised concerns that this was an example of police cuts being the “thin end of the wedge”.

He said: “Just last week, our borough commander in Harrow was very active reassuring the Muslim community following the horrific attack on Finsbury Park Mosque.

“He has been able to invest time in building good links with a broad range of people in Harrow, something that the new tri-borough commander will struggle to be able to do to the same extent.”

Mr Thomas also said he will be taking up the issue with Nick Hurd, who is the Minister of State for policing and the fire service, and MP for Ruislip, Northwood and Pinner.

Announcements from the Government show they are considering reversing changes to the police funding formula, but Mayor Sadiq Khan fears this would not be enough to protect officer numbers.

MP for Finchley and Golders Green Mike Freer said: "I am confident that Simon Rose will make an excellent Borough Commander for the tri-Borough command of Barnet, Harrow and Brent.

"The key measure will remain the ability of the local police to utilise their resources effectively to address crime in all three boroughs.

"The Borough Commander is aware of my concerns and reducing the cost of senior management to protect front line policing is welcome provided my constituents remain well served."
