Luke Barker and Nicky Fenn put a disappointing summer for British tennis on the national front by taking the men's and women's titles respectively at Barnet Lawn Tennis Club's annual championships.

In the same week Andy Murray was beaten by Sam Querrey in the quarter-finals of Wimbledon, and Jo Konta lost out to Venus Williams in the last four of the women's singles, the duo had no such misery in their own tournament.

Fenn triumphed for the fourth-straight year, beating long-term rival Sufun Soon in straight sets, 6-3 6-1.

She added that title to that of the ladies' doubles alongside partner Tina Bloch, again in straight sets, but was denied a treble in the mixed.

Alongside brother Kyle, the pair were beaten 9-7 in a third-set tie-break for the narrowest of losses, which brought a two-and-a-half-hour epic to a close and gave the title to Greg Kraushar and Suzanne Petrou.

Luke Barker triumphed over Liam Power in a three-set battle to win the men's singles, while there was also plenty of joy for senior player Richard Laciny, who is in his 60s.

He rolled back the years to play nine sets on the day, winning the men's c singles, the doubles, alongside Lewis Long, and later teamed up with wife Sylvia - but lost out in the mixed c doubles.

There were also wins for George Eldred, Albert Durbal, Jackie Czuprynski, Bolaji Kuti, Martyn Trainor, Danny and Judy Williamson, Jonathan and Rachael Leffman, Linda Lumb-Evans, William Herbert, Seren Durbal, Pradeep Fernando and Tamara Kuti.

The club are inviting locals to visit Gloucester Road on July 22 and 23 when they have another open day as part of the Great British Tennis Weekend.

The event runs from 2–6pm and there will be free tennis all afternoon and special reductions and treats for anyone who joins on the day.
