A student who could not speak English three years ago, is fulfilling her dream of studying law at university.
Elina Popovida, 18, will be studying at Newcastle University after achieving A* B B in her A level exams.
Elina and her mother came over from Greece three years ago, and before attending Hertswood Academy could not speak English.
She said: “I feel like I have won the 100m. One day I could not speak English, and now I am going to law school.
“It is a dream come true.”
“I did not think I would do as well as I have, but I am so excited about starting my course.
“I am going to celebrate with my mum by having lobster in London.”
Elina’s mother Lia Foulidou said: “I am so very, very proud of her.
“She has exceeded any expectations, it is beyond what I would expect of her, but what she has done is incredible.”
Headteacher Peter Gillett said: “Elina joined the school in year 10, and for two weeks she sat waiting outside my office, until we could get a place for her.
“Since then she has gone from strength to strength, and we are delighted with what she and so many of our students at Hertswood Academy have achieved.”
