A politician has taken up the challenge to experience the struggles disabled have getting around town.

Oliver Dowden MP for Hertsmere has agreed to travel up Shenley Road, Borehamwood in a wheelchair to experience first-hand the difficulties of getting up the high street.

The challenge was put forward by wheelchair user Lara Croft, and has gathered a lot of support on Facebook, with many people commenting about how hard they have found using wheelchairs or crutches in the area.

There are many bumps in the pavements, and the slope down towards the road adds difficulty for those in wheelchairs, especially when there are a lot of people in town for the markets on Tuesdays and Saturdays.

In the past Mr Dowden has travelled the length of Shenley Road in a blindfold to highlight the difficulty the blind community face on the same street.

The event is likely to happen in the first week of September, and the Borehamwood Times will be there to record what goes on.

If any councillors would also like to take part in the challenge please contact reporter Morgan Condon on morgan.condon@london.newsquest.co.uk for more information.

Pavements and roads are looked after Ringway on behalf of Hertfordshire County Council.

Ringway divisional manager Kevin Carrol said: “Recent inspections have identified some areas of paving on Shenley Road which will need repair and these will be added to the future work schedule. However, no urgent repairs or trip hazards were noted.

“If residents have concerns about a specific hazard we would be grateful if they could report it, giving a precise description and location, via the Fault Reporting System at https://www.hertfordshire.gov.uk/faultreporting.
