Further details have been released about the plans submitted to the council for flats in Whetstone.

Pictures of Meadow Residential's plans to transform Barnet House in High Road, Whetstone have been released, showing the style of external refurbishment intended for the 229 homes to be built by converting the existing offices.

The initial plans gained significant criticism and were branded "dog kennel" flats by MP for Chipping Barnet, Theresa Villiers, who sought reassurances from the developer with regards the new plans.

Despite this a spokesperson for Meadow Residential named these plans "feasible" even as the new plans have been launched.

The spokesperson said: "After two months of consultation with residents and stakeholders surrounding the site, we are very pleased to submit plans for the redevelopment of the Barnet House site. We think our proposals will transform this site into a high-quality, well managed rental development that makes excellent use of a large brownfield site in a Borough that needs new homes.

"We know the building generates a range of views in Whetstone and across the Borough, so in developing the design we have tried to get to the point where we both respect the existing building and neighbouring properties whilst also improving the environment both on the site and in the surrounding area.

"Whilst the consented scheme for 254 studios in Barnet House remains a feasible option, the enhanced application for 229 new rental properties represents a far better option and we are hopeful of securing a planning consent for our proposals."

The new plans will exceed the Mayor of London's guidance for space standard with the minimum unit size being 51 sq/m x 70 sq/m x 86 sq/m, and include one, two and three bedroom flats.

The flats will also be built as part of the Build to Rent scheme, with construction on-site beginning in Spring 2018, subject to planning permission, taking two years to complete.
