A new initiative encouraging residents to recycle more have been introduced this week.

As of Monday, Hertsmere Borough Council have started to accept brown paper in the brown recycling bins.

This means that people do not have to throw this into the rubbish which ends up in landfill sites, or save it to drop off at a recycling point in the county.

This will include brown envelopes and brown paper bags and all non-greasy brown paper.

Recycling Officer at Hertsmere Borough Council Jenna Bates said: “I am delighted to be announcing this change to our recycling provision, which I believe will make it easier for our residents and hopefully improve our recycling rates.

“Paper has been a source of confusion and one of the largest contaminants of bins in the borough. I think this change will make a positive difference for our residents.

“We will be reminding residents through our social media channels of the introduction of brown paper into the brown recycling bin; so please like and follow us.”

This addition to the service will not affect the recycling of white paper, newspapers, magazines, junk mail, leaflets, catalogues and directories, which should still be put in the blue box.
