Dangerous moped riding in the community is facing a crack-down in the community.

Police from Hertfordshire Constabulary are targeting riders who drive dangerously or anti-socially in Hertsmere due to the high volume of calls coming from residents of Borehamwood and Elstree.

This includes people who drive dangerously on the roads, pavements or alleyways, anti-social riding, and drivers who don’t wear helmets or cause distress, alarm or harassment to others.

Since June, five section 59 warnings have been issued, which has led to two motorcycles being seized from boys aged 16 and 17.

These have been issued alongside Community Protection Warnings (CPWs) and Criminal Protection Notices (CPNs), the latter of which is a criminal offence.

Assistant Investigator from the Community Safety Unit Claire Morris said: “Although we have given out several warnings and seized bikes alongside Community Protection Warnings and Community Protection Notices, we need the public’s help in giving us registration numbers and descriptions of the offending motorcyclists, to keep our roads and streets safer.

“The problem is that they are not only a danger to themselves, but they are also a danger to pedestrians and other road users.”

“I’d encourage parents not to buy these motorised scooters/mopeds for their children unless they have a suitable place for them to ride safely. Many people do not realise they also need to be registered to the owner and adequately insured.”

Anyone with information of dangerous riders, video footage or number plates of vehicles involved contact the police on 101.
