A fundraising concert not only raised the roof, but more than £1,000 to help church refurbishments.

The Borehamwood Brass Band performed at 96 Shenley Road to raise money for the Holy Cross Church in Balmoral Drive.

The band have rehearsed at the venue for 30 years most Friday nights and wanted to help fund the refurbishments at the church.

The church have now raised £2,600 of the £5,000 needed to make the repairs needed to fix the central heating in the building, as otherwise they would not be able to rehearse there in the winter months.

Guests were serenaded by piper George MacGregor on arriving and leaving the party and a performance from Theatre Club entertained guests with songs from the West End.

Vicar at All Saints Church Reverend Tim Warr introduced the evening, and the Deputy Mayor of Elstree and Borehamwood, Cllr Victor Eni and his wife Martine were guests of honour.

Cllr Eni said: “This is the perfect way to support our local community, with residents rallying together for the cause, well done all.

“The band, which were founded in 1971, have worked over the years to support the local community, supporting the Elstree & Borehamwood Town Council, Borehamwood & Elstree Twin Town Association, and other local community organised functions.”

Band secretary Andrew Grady said: “I don’t think there has been an event like this in Borehamwood to raise money for a local church.

“I thought we may raise £350, and so to raise more than £1,000 is amazing. It was a really special event that people will remember for a long time.

“It was great to be a part of an event, where the community is coming together to raise money for something in the area. People have even started giving donations to help out.”

The band are looking for tenor horn, euphonium, and cornet players and advise anyone interested to contact them borehamwoodbrass@hotmail.com, visit their website www.borehamwoodbrass.org.uk or the Facebook page.
