Fire in the North Sky: Epic Tales from Finland
The Southbank Centre will play host to incredible music from three of Finland’s most notable folk performer, Anna-Kaisa Liedes, Kristiina Ilmonen and Timo Väänänen as they join British storyteller Nick Hennessey to tell the stories of 100 years of Finland since its independence.
The musicians play instruments mainly unheard of by British sensibilities, such as the traditional kantele, a plucked boxlike instrument similar to the zither, while Hennessey tells the epic poem of the Kalevala, which has become a staple of Finnish oral history and folklore.
Expect a visceral, beautiful experience steeped in tradition.
Southbank Centre, Belvedere Road, London, SE1 8XX. Contact Southbank Centre for ticket info.
Sunday
Wolfgang David and Takeshi Kakehashi
The next in the Mill Hill Music Club’s calendar comes in the form of renowned Austrian violinist Wolfgang David and Japanese pianist who was blind from birth, Takeshi Kakehashi, performing Romantic classics from Beethoven, Schubert and Brahms at Henrietta Barnett School.
The performers have built a wonderful communion and have performed together all over the world, receiving marvellous reviews from critics and audiences wherever they go.
This is definitely one to put in the diary.
