A GP surgery has been giving more health checks than any other in a drive to get people healthy in time for Christmas.

Page, Herbert, Grossmark and Harvard (PHGH), based in Temple Fortune Health Centre, has delivered 70 per cent more NHS health checks than any other practice in Barnet.

The checks are health MOTs for patients aged 40-74, without any prior health conditions, and are available for free every five years.

Cllr Helena Hart, chairman of Barnet Council’s health and wellbeing board, said: "I am delighted with the success of our public health campaign to increase the number of NHS Health Checks carried out in Barnet and in particular to the contribution and fine example set by PHGH in Temple Fortune and Nurse Sheba Kanaber.

"These NHS Health Checks are vitally important, both to improving health and to halting the progress of disease by early intervention and treatment."

Last year the health check programme picked up 600 patients with elevated blood pressure, 1,500 with high cholesterol, 1,800 with two or more cardiovascular risk factors and 68 patients with atrial fibrillation, heart disease, diabetes, hypertension or chronic kidney disease.
