Advice on how to avoid burglaries this winter has been issued.

Metropolitan Police has issued advice on how to protect your homes from burglary during the Christmas season.

Last year there were 189 burglaries across London on Christmas Eve, and the Met is now suggesting people keep their valuables out of sight, be cautious when using social media so as to not advertise when they are heading off on holiday.

The police also advice to ask a family member to pop in to open and close curtains, so as to give the illusion that someone is home, and to use a time to turn on lights, Tv or radio so the house appears occupied.

Superintendent Sean Wilson, the Met’s operational lead for burglary, said: "Burglary can be a very traumatic experience which can have a long-lasting impact on victims, especially at this time of year.

"The Met is continually working hard to prevent offences occurring, arrest offenders and support victims of crime.

"Please be vigilant and if you see anything suspicious contact police with a description of the people and any vehicle they are using. In the event you witness a crime in progress call 999 immediately."

Officers track down burglary suspects using various techniques including Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) and high visibility patrols in burglary hotspot areas.

Police also warn for people to protect themselves against distraction burglary, where people attempt to gain access to a house, by making sure to ask for identification of those knocking at the door.
