Voters in Barnet are being encouraged to check they are registered ahead of May 3 local elections.

Barnet Council has launched its campaign to encourage residents to make sure they can vote ahead of the council election on May 3.

From February 26 every home in the borough should receive a letter to confirm the names of those currently on the electoral register at that address, and residents are being asked to make sure this information is correct.

If not, those who are eligible to vote but are not listed on the letter should visit gov.uk/register-to-vote before April 17 to apply.

Cath Shaw, Barnet Council’s deputy chief executive and deputy returning officer, said: “In the build-up to the local elections, it’s important to make sure that everyone who is eligible to vote is registered. “We want to make it as easy as possible for people to vote in the forthcoming local elections, so they can have their say on the political direction of the council over the next four years.

“Residents will soon start receiving their household notification letters and we would strongly encourage everyone to look out of these and check the details for their respective household.”

Those eligible to vote in the Barnet council elections are those over 18 years old on polling day and British, qualifying Commonwealth or EU citizens.

The deadline for registering is April 17 and applications for postal votes or to change a postal or proxy voting arrangements must be received by 5pm on April 18.

New applications for proxy votes must be received before 5pm on April 25, ahead of polling day on May 3, from 7am-10pm.
