A keen cook makes it to the final five in a London wide competition to find the tastiest home-made soup recipe.

Hundreds of people were boiled down to five finalists in a pressurised 1-hour cook-off at the Waitrose Cookery School in London.

Adam Cannon from East Finchley, Barnet, took part with his creamy courgette and leek soup until losing to a red pepper and chorizo broth.

Mr Cannon said: “It was a fantastic experience cooking in a professional kitchen and making a recipe I love.

“It can’t get better than that.

“My recipe was created out of leftovers, we throw so much away these days so really my inspiration came from avoiding food waste”.

Youth homelessness charity Centrepoint yesterday hosted the final of The Big Broth.

Chosen by a panel of judges and chaired by a food critic, the competition was presented by radio 2 DJ Sara Cox.

The competition’s winner will see their soup sold in Waitrose shops in autumn 2018.

Centrepoint are hoping to sell over 200,000 pots in Waitrose shops.

The money raised will help give vulnerable young people a safe place to stay, tackle health problems and find work.

Richard Utting, event director from Centrepoint said: “There has always been a link between homelessness and soup.

“We wanted to build on that to make a positive association with soup and give the entire nation a chance to get involved.

“As well as raise awareness of youth homelessness in the UK, we also wanted a new way to help raise vital funds.

“What better way, than through tasty food”.
